About
A MiniLesson is a short lesson built from a sequence of items — each item is one screen that presents content or sets the student a task. Students work through the items on their own, and speaking, listening, reading, writing and vocabulary tasks are graded automatically, either deterministically or using speech recognition and AI. Teachers get the score in the Moodle gradebook, plus per-item reports and the students' recordings and transcripts for review.
Item types (27) include multiple choice, dictation, gap fills (typing, speaking, drag and drop), read aloud and passage reading, listen and repeat, speech cards, fluency, video shadowing, free speaking and free writing with AI feedback, live AI audio chat, vocabulary games and interactive fiction.
Building lessons: author items by hand, import them from CSV or JSON, generate a whole lesson with AI from a topic, a passage, a file or a YouTube video using one of ~75 lesson templates, or pull a ready-made lesson out of the shared Lesson Bank.
Also supported: the Moodle mobile app, LTI launch, web services, over 60 speech recognition and text-to-speech locales, and per-item completion and grading reports.
Requires a Cloud Poodll account. Audio recording, text to speech, speech recognition and AI grading and generation run through the Cloud Poodll service, so the activity needs an API user and secret from https://poodll.com to function. AI tasks can optionally be pointed at your own OpenAI, Azure or Gemini keys instead.
