The Differentiator plugin for Moodle helps teachers formulate, refine, and store learning goals in a structured way. It is based on The Differentiator by Ian Byrd and has been adapted for Moodle so that learning goals can be created and managed directly within the LMS.

Purpose

Writing clear learning objectives is often difficult. The plugin guides educators through the process by offering structured prompts and pedagogical frameworks, making it easier to formulate learning goals that align with instructional design principles such as constructive alignment.

Key Features

Learning Goal Builder

The plugin provides templates and selectable elements that help construct learning goals by combining:

• Cognitive processes (e.g. Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, Creating)
• Action verbs associated with Bloom's taxonomy
• Subject content
• Required resources
• Expected products or outcomes
• Group settings and collaboration options

These elements are combined into complete learning-goal statements.

Learning Goal Repository

Unlike the original Differentiator website, Moodle users can:

• Save learning goals permanently
• Organize and manage previously created goals
• Reuse goals across multiple courses

User Tours

A Moodle User Tour configuration is included, allowing institutions to provide guided onboarding for new users.

Typical Workflow

1. Open the Differentiator interface.
2. Choose a thinking skill or Bloom level.
3. Select an action verb.
4. Define the content or subject.
5. Optionally specify:

• resources,
• group size,
• expected product/output.
